hand forging samurai sword blades process

    About Shinwa:

Shinwa swords are made by hand using traditional methods in the ancient sword-making township of Lonquan. The sword-making history of this town can be traced back to the twentieth year of the Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty – exceptional sword making continues there still today. The swordsmiths of Lonquan can apprentice for up to six years before they begin to forge these functional works of art on their own.

Each Shinwa sword is hand forged at temperatures of up to 1,100 °F and continuously heated, folded, hammered and shaped before being oil quenched and then straightened. Damascus steel blades are folded as many as ten times to yield up to 2,056 layers of premium Damascus steel. After quenching the blade is then ground and hand sharpened and polished by the swordsmith on a series of wet stones. Each set of these wet stones contains a finer level of silicate particles, which produces an even sharper edge. In the final stages of this painstaking process, the tsuka is wrapped and tsuba and other fittings are added before a thin coat of oil is added to the blade to prevent corrosion.

I do not understand the hostility towards this Shinwa Sword.......When I got it the blade was straight, scabbard was clean, handle was solid (for now). Like all double edged "damascus" swords the blade is not as solid as a single edged katana blade. This is just common sense though because of the way its manufactured (Single edged thicker / double edged thinner). For the sale price, I think its a very good buy for people who want to add a double edged sword to their collection.

i own one of these Reviewed by on Nov 01, 2015   3 out of 5

first off these are NOT FULL Tang and also you would have to know a pretty nice black smith to get damascus steel at this price. lies and bulls@it aside its not a bad sword it does come covered in wax but thats good it keeps your blade nice while it sits in the warehouse it slices and dices but dont be expecting to have it forever if you do. in my opinon a nice buy for the price. they should stop with the full tang crap and damascus is more then a design on the blade its the blade itself.

The blade is good Reviewed by Brandon Allen on Oct 29, 2015   3 out of 5

The blade on this sword is good but the handle is poorly constructed. The wood cracked after a few wacks at a fairly small branch.
