The original Assegai was invented by the legendary Zulu King, Shaka in the early 1800's. It's long broad blade and short handle were ideal for thrusting and revolutionized tribal warfare in Southern Africa. This Cold Steel version has all the features that made the original so deadly. The 13 1/2" long blade is constructed from SK-5 Medium Carbon Steel, and is no doubt tree splitting sharp. The shaft is constructed from Premium American Ash designed for throwing accuracy and a tight grip. 38" ov.

Cold Steel – 6ft. Battle Ready Assegai Long Shaft Spear w/ Sheath
Sectional Black Wooden Staff With Chain
I've been collecting bladed weapons for about 15 years now and I can honestly say that finding a good spear is very difficult, however this spear is phenomenal, especially for the price. The wood is exposed on the other side of the blade (check the long assegai picture to get an idea) but the double bolt construction guarantee that it fits securely (always pre-drill small holes to avoid splitting the wood)
I have put this thing through various cutting, stabbing, and throwing tests, I highly doubt you could realistically break the metal from the wood shaft with any practical application.
Coldsteel is pretty high end quality stuff, and if it came down to survival I believe I could trust this thing with my life
While it looks like a good spear in the picture, Cold Steel fails to deliver a quality product this time. The spear is one-sided, so on the backside it looks like a trowel. This would normally be fine, as I am not concerned with cosmetics. However, it DOES create a weak point, and if the spear lands in the target the wrong way, the spear head will break off from the part of the spear that holds it to the shaft. If you intend to actually use this, I highly recommend not buying.
The order came FAST! Great job on shipping. I read in some other review that they had trouble with the spear head to shaft fit and had to sand and widdle the shaft to make it fit. Place the spear head on the shaft. bBang the shaft on the ground non spear head side until it won't go on any more . Than all you have to do is ust a propane torch or some other open flame to heat the shaft end of the spear head just alittle. NOT ENOUGH TO CHANGE THE TEMPER!. About 10 or 15 seconds and pound some more and you will have a TIGHT FIT! SUPER TIGHT FIT!! I'd replace the screws with stainless. I liked it so much I ordered the boar spear. Sharp strong anda hell of a piece of gear.
First off; the blade is amazing. Heavy duty, solid construction, sharp as a razor and a extremely sharp point. Basically what you'd expect from Cold Steel. Now, the bad. The shaft, while sturdy, was too large to fit the head. I had to file and sand the shaft to make the head fit. After that though, this thing is a great buy for only $45.
This is a very nice product for home defense. I keep mine under the bed. The product is light and fast in the hands. It has good reach. The shaft is short enough that the product can be moved in a small bedroom. The edges and point are razor sharp. This is not a toy or ceremonial display piece. This is for home-self-defense use. It requires very little practice to get the feel for it. If they made this out of synthetic like the FGX nightshade line from coldsteel I would gift it to others in my family. If this would have come assembled I would have given it a perfect score. The minor assembly required gets it a 4 out of 5. A coldsteel FGX Nightshade version would come assembled. I hope to see this in FGX (synthetic) soon.
