How are Spring Assist different from a Gravity Knife or Automatic Switchblade Knife?

Gravity or Switch Blade knives feature a button, level, or other type of switch that releases a spring pressure to automatically open the blade. On a Spring Assist knife, there is no separate button or switch. Instead, you apply pressure to part of the blade to begin the opening process. This is usually a small bump of metal which sticks out under the knife, making it fast and comfortable to use. Once you press on that part of the blade, it automatically opens and locks into place. Since the action of opening the knife is started by pressing the blade metal, instead of a button or switch, it is considered to bypass the laws which ban Switch Blade knives.

I loved this knive, I got a good 2 years out of it, and I used it almost everyday. Untell I was up in the mountains of new mexico and it broke, I had known it was going to break soon becase it got loose. Then a screw poped out and the knive blade fell out. I use the blade as a throwing knive, so im still using it today!

    Totaly worth it !!!!

This knife is definitely nice. It's bulky and solid in my palm, which is good for people with big hands, but might be uncomfortable with those with smaller hands.

For construction, the bulk of it is plastic, yet it's hardened and heavy. The red plates on there are cheap steel, but all that matters is that it is solid so long as you take care of it. (Meaning that dropping it would probably break it.) The clip is a little bit cheap, but I always remove the clips anyway. (However, it doesn't look like it can be removed as it's hex screwed into the handle and what seems like the blade.)

The spring is fast and easy to thumb quickly. I can draw it and have the blade out within two seconds. The pommel spike (Window breaker) is solid steel and would easily shatter a window if you tried. However the cord cutter is dull and annoying to dork around with, it would be easier just to cut the cord with the blade of the knife instead.

As far as functionality, the blade is not honed, but that is easily changed. (Sharpness doesn't determine quality, because sharpening it takes a few minutes to do.) The blade's center of balance is halfway down the handle, making it hard to throw if you choose to do so. (Which I don't recommend, the blade is for fleshy and softer targets, and will bend easily if repeatedly stricken into wood.)

Overall a good knife for the price, although it's not the Rolls Royce of spring knives, it's good quality for the price. Just don't go fighting any wooden men or armored goblins with it.

Probably the best knife I have ever owned... The opening is very fast... Even faster than most spring assists... And the knife is very sturdy... Also has a cord cutter and window breaker which is a plus...

I purchased this item for my wife, she has now replaced the butterfly knife I bought her to carry done years ago with this awesome piece, just as fast as a switchblade without the legal issue with carrying a true switchblade. Blade comes very sharp and can be easily made razor sharp with fine stone. Another A+ product from true swords, their customer service is top notch.
