How are Spring Assist different from a Gravity Knife or Automatic Switchblade Knife?

Gravity or Switch Blade knives feature a button, level, or other type of switch that releases a spring pressure to automatically open the blade. On a Spring Assist knife, there is no separate button or switch. Instead, you apply pressure to part of the blade to begin the opening process. This is usually a small bump of metal which sticks out under the knife, making it fast and comfortable to use. Once you press on that part of the blade, it automatically opens and locks into place. Since the action of opening the knife is started by pressing the blade metal, instead of a button or switch, it is considered to bypass the laws which ban Switch Blade knives.

The blade is great, the in line lock works awesome, the design fits ok in the hand, the spring assist is quick, the clip is tight and the overall design is ok. That's really about all I can say for the pros to this knife. When I got it in the mail, it was missing a screw. The ring is actually a C shaped piece of gunmetal or something similarly inadequate screwed into place. When I bought it I was expecting it to be a little more durable but then again it's only eight dollars. Once open the blade wiggles just a bit, and it's gotten worse over time. When opened it sounds like something inside is rattling, that could be the spring though. Finally, most of the screws don't stay put. I have taken out all of the screws that hold the ring in place a length of steel wire in it's place. The screw along the spine loosens constantly and the one holding the blade needs tightening every once in a while.

When purchasing it I was planning on having something to carry around with me through the streets of Chicago (less than two and a half inch blade) because, lets be frank, the chances of getting shanked aren't that low. So will this work for the purpose of defense? No, no way. Does it work as a knife that I can use as a utility knife for whatever and not worry about breaking it because it only cost eight dollars? Sure, why not?

I just got mine today and I love it! It's VERY sharp, it came relatively quick (4 days) and its pretty awesome. It's blade is a little short, but it is exactly as it was described. Loved the service and I will definitely be shopping from this website again.
