Definitely compact, I would not even think of trying out the "ax head" feature and outside of weekend camping I would not rely on this as a survival tool. Camping great anything else as a last resort tool.

Anytime I order something I buy one of these. We use them in the woods and at home, even let the kids play in the sandbox with them. I wouldn't build a fox-hole with it, but I do use them to make Dakota fire pits.

6 camping trips of shoveling, hitting tent pegs in and chop small trees branch's and still good to go... Just be carefully to properly put the blades when storing and make sure you take it all out when cholling as they may dislodge.. But great for the price and did dig snow with it... It's meant for backpacking not digging a car out... Works well.

When I got this little shovel I was pleasantly surprised! I loved the fact that it was so little I could carry it around my waist. Worked GREAT on my garden. I will buying more to give away as Christmas gifts.

I was not sure about this tool. Looked at reviews others had written, sounded good so I ordered one. Shipped fast, When looking at this shovel and pic tool and using it fount to be very handy and compact, you can wear it on your belt with out noticing it. This is a great camping tool, exploring, hiking this would be a must to carry with me, again it's light and compact, you be glad you had it when you would need it, I pan for gold comes in really handy.

Mar 25, 2014

It is much smaller! than entrenching tool, but just right for a bug out bag! This will work for drainage ditch around a tent, latrine quickie hole, etc...!!!! Good value.
Mar 17, 2014

I love it, it's a smaller version of my old military entrenching tool. I'm going to use it when I go treasure hunting. The carrying case is perfect for hunting and treasure hunting. It is really built sturdy, I'm happy with this purchase.
Mar 14, 2014

Thought this was going to be like an Army entrenching tool, however, it is but smaller! Just right for a bug out bag! If I want to dig a fox hole, I steal a real shovel! This will work for drainage ditch around a tent, latrine quickie hole, etc...!!!!
Feb 09, 2014

this is a very nice survival shovel. it works very well and it is very compact. I really didn't know how good the serrated edge worked until I used it to chop down a tree and it surprised me. The only problem is that the rubber grip comes off, but I will put some glue in it and it will be fixed.
Dec 06, 2013

Smaller than expected, but actually glad it is. This will be an easy fit for your BOB or belt. Wouldn't want to dig a big hole with it, but, if it's all you have, it could do the job. Tool and pouch very sturdy!
Sep 25, 2013

very handy small tool, can carry on your person or in the back of your vehicle, for emergency's
Sep 08, 2013

Great little shovels for light to medium chores like digging out weeds or making a small hole for a fence post or such. At the BOGO price it's a super value you can't pass up. They fold up so compact you can almost put them in your pocket. I would recommend to all for their convenience of use.
Aug 20, 2013

Bought two of these shovels, one for yard work and the other for my sons Boy Scout camping backpack. We are both very happy with the small size and big quality of these shovels. They have performed every task we have use them for. A great small shovel at a great price, don't miss out on this one ! ! !
Aug 20, 2013

This compact shovel is an awesome tool to keep in your bug out bag. You can also use it when metal detecting to scrape just the top surface of earth away. It folds away nicely and is very sturdy when put together. For the price, buy 2.
Aug 17, 2013

This one contact but overall user durable tool great for bushcraft, hiking, camping or survival.
Aug 05, 2013

The shovel works great! I use it for treasure detecting, fits the hammer loop on my pouch perfect, doesn'r get in the way like larger entrenching tools. Wouldn't want to dig fox holes with it though.
Jul 26, 2013

I LOVE this shovel! i've put it through h**l and it hasn't broken. this shovel is not only good for digging, but also, the pick is good good for getting rid of pesky rodents! (WORD TO THE WISE) works great with spreading peanut butter and jelly! also works great for taking out power lines, and perfect for killing ants! thanks BUDK
Feb 04, 2013

This shovel O M G I cut my grass with this thing. People buy it its the best thing that could have happened to me my life feels complete now it is the s**t. You can cut down trees with this f-cking shovel i love it so much I'm speechless.

I Did a review on this shovel just over a year ago, nothing has changed really from what I said last, although, after awhile the head of the shovel becomes wobbly. Not enough to effect anything. But still, Most of the paint has come off around well used areas and its a little dinged up, but its done its job and has exceeded my expectations
May 03, 2012

Yes, it's a little small, but I tend to pack light when I go camping and in the case this takes up about as much space as two packs of cigarettes. I figured I would get about two holes out of it before it broke in 4 pieces, and wouldn't be to heartbroken, considering the price. This thing has stood up to some abuse though. I must have dug 20 some odd holes with it, between single use latrine pits, 3'+ fire pits, setting posts for temporary shelters and then beat it against rocks to get the dirt off, moved hot coals into the cooking area of the fire, etc and it's still going strong. Yea, you're not going to want to do any major digging with it but it sure beats dulling my hatchet doing all the jobs this little shovel does now. I'm pretty happy with it.
Mar 02, 2012

Overall this shovel seems well made and convenient. I got a small Ziplock bag so I can store some magnesium and matches in the handle for fire starting, I'm probably going to buy a pen torch and see if it fits inside as well.
Feb 25, 2012

Very good shovel I got it as a gift and it is awesome! The ice pick (first thought to just be a marketing tool) is also very good. Took me 5 minutes to take out a block of ice.

Just received the Survival Shovel, this thing is pretty nice & well worth the price. This is perfect for carrying with you on camping trips or gardening. It has a nice little pouch it fits in that can hook onto your belt and folds up pretty small. If you guys are looking for a huge shovel to use on a daily basis don't get this. This is for Survival/Camping mostly so this is built to be small and compact and easy to travel with. A+++
Feb 11, 2011

I'd say this shovel is an epic looking thing used for taking down terrorists in Afghanistan!!
Jan 21, 2011

A decent little shovel for the price and the cloth pouch seems like it will hold up for quite a while. It's smaller than I expected, but perfect for the clandestine herb gardener since it can be carried on the belt leaving both hands free to carry potted plants or other garden essentials. I wouldn't try digging a large fox-hole with it because it would take all day, each shovel full is only a couple cups worth of soil or whatever... but it's perfect for casual camping or gardening and the hoe and pick options are quite useful as well.
Sep 21, 2010

Great addition to any camping/survival pack! Very compact and lightweight, and assembly is quick and easy!
May 14, 2008

This Folding Shovel wasnt as big as i though it would be but its damn good.
So far the thing goes togeather really well.
The saw blade isnt sharp at all but i guess it'll come in handy.
Feb 18, 2017

This shovel was purchased as a gift for me over a year ago. I recently had the opportunity to use it, and I must say, I was impressed. I had to dig four trenches (two at 12" deep by 6' long; two at 18"x10') to expose underground electrical wiring for a home inspection (Note: I disconnected the power at the breaker, and was very careful as this tool is all steel). I began the digging with a normal shovel, but used this shovel for most of the work; it saved me a lot of time. The weakest part of this shovel is the point where the threaded shafts screw into eachother; halfway through the job the threads bent here and the shovel handle became wobbly and unable to be tightened all the way. I solved this issue by cutting back some of the rubber grip on the upper shaft and welding the two shafts together, creating one solid handle. The shovel is a lot stronger now and can handle harder blows... very much worth sacrificing it's compactibility. I pushed the middle grip down to meet the grip at the end for a larger, more reasonably-sized grip; and then I wrapped the entire handle and shaft in electrical tape to provide some insulation from electricity (NOT a safety measure to he relied upon!). My final modification will be dipping the handle in some rubber-paint-stuff for tool handles to give it a smooth, clean-looking handle (instead of one wrapped in tape). This tool seems like it will last me a long time and I look forward to using it more. I can foresee the shovelhead becoming too loose after more use, and will probably end up welding that into place, as well. I take one star because the original design doesn't work well, but leave four because it's made of good materials and is strong when the handle becomes one piece. If I didn't have access to a welder, I would have given this 2/5 stars.

Purchased to include in my tools on 5th wheel camper. Shovel/pic is small but light and well made for emergency situations. If you want a military spade, buy one, this is not it!
Jun 16, 2014

Just right for inclusion in my emergency stuff in the car's trunk. As with all emergency 'stuff' one hopes to never actually use it! But I think it fits my needs.
Mar 16, 2014

smaller that i thought but great to have in your vehicle if you live in the snow area it could get you out of a problem
Jan 02, 2014

i loved the shovels with the pick just what i was looking for however the case strap broke as soon as put on belt
Dec 20, 2013

The shovel is everything it said it was, compact, versital, light. The only draw back is the size. I thought it would have an extension, so that the work load would be a little less. Other than that, it is a very good tool.

Makes quick work of digging through tough dirt and with chop away thin vegetation. But when i tried to cut though a moderately sized root in the ground i noticed the hinge stared to loosen, not very loose though.. Still a great shovel.

The shipping on this item was surprisingly fast, received it within 48 hours of order. The quality is excelent, you can tell by the weight and feel that they used high quality steel. The 16" overall size is from the tip of the shovel head to the end of the handle when fully assembled, but this is more of a trowel than an entrenching shovel. The "shovel" head is 5" long and 3 3/4" wide, Pick is 4 1/4" long and 1" wide. Overall i would suggest this for camping because of it's small pack-up size, but don't try to dig any big holes with it.
May 24, 2012

good quality, solid tool, perfect for the S.H.T.F. kit, quite small, compact enough for the lightest of bug out bags, good value for money
Apr 29, 2012

I have bought this exact shovel from Amazon.com and its decent. Smaller then I have expected though. Its very compact and great for digging. The saw is also great. It is sharp and will get the job done. This shovel functions as a saw, hoe, dibble, pick, spear, hammer, and obviously a shovel. Great buy!
Jan 03, 2012

Yep Small, Sturdy, Lite, Just what I wanted. It's a survival shovel your going to be digging for water, post holes for a shelter, shallow trenches, clearing a small camp site.. If you need bigger holes or deeper wells buy a bigger shovel. If it's the only tool in your hand at the time it's the best tool you have. But it does need a better case. I like it, fits great in my bag. Great tool for the money.
Dec 30, 2011

Yes, this shovel is small, but it digs very well and have tested it many times... I'm not too sure the case will hold up though. But overall I'm happy :)
Oct 17, 2011

I like to keep things in my trunk so I'm ready for everything. This means I need things that are small and compact. Its the size of a gardening shovel, but seems to be sturdier and more versatile. It is welcome in my emergency kit any time.
Oct 13, 2011

It's small but more than capable of doing whatever you need it to do. Small size lets me carry it in my BOB and it is very sturdy. Going to grind an edge on mine for better chopping. Overall well worth it. Again don't let it's size mislead you it's AWESOME!!!!
Mar 28, 2011

its defiantly a good and sturdy shovel but i was not expecting it to be as small as it is. itll work for gardening and camping and maybe for car emergencies for digging yourself out of a trap. i say its perfect to the description but a note to how big it is would have been nice.
Mar 04, 2010

small but considering it is a multiple piece design is actually relatively sturdy. I will say i think that the serration should be sharpened and it's not along with the blade of the shovel.
Sep 14, 2014

Very small shovel, would be ok in garden, digging a small fire pit or picking up dog poop. But digging your vehicle out of snow or mud you will be digging for a long time. Does fold up and fits compact in it's own carrier, but not what I was expecting. Guess I should have paid attention to the specs.
May 29, 2014

good basic shovel great for digging fire pits and such small lite weight come in hardy when need one
Nov 14, 2013

An interesting tool that wears many hats. Looks good attached to a work belt or BugOutBag. Makes a fine addition to the trunk or tool rack in your vehicle. Not for heavy jobs but beats the stuffing out of using you bare hands or an empty tin can or other expedient things folks use in a pinch.
Sep 22, 2013

They are smaller then i thought the are more of a gardening shovel but they seem like they are built sturdy and come with a good sheath
Feb 24, 2012

Just got the shovel..its okay but still pretty small...good for gardening and or digging a small hole...but if you want something to really help dig a good size hole this is not it...I'm going to be giving it to my cousin to play in the sandbox or something....
Feb 18, 2011

the size of a small garden shovel. (notice no size in descrpt. a bit misleading) the standard version of this camping style shovel has a head 2x wider. Otherwise a handy little shovel.
Feb 02, 2009

i was expecting it to be double the size, good for digging small holes the pick is ok the saw is not sharp on the positive very light to carry looks bigger in the picture ok for the price
Mar 28, 2014

When I got the shovel in my shipment I noticed how small it was. I did not expect it to be that small. I purchased this an emergency shovel and a week later I got stuck in the Colorado Mountains and found this shovel to not be worth the purchase. I am going out this weekend and buy a survival shovel that will help not hinder in an emergency. Bad Purchase but good learning experience.
