How are Spring Assist different from a Gravity Knife or Automatic Switchblade Knife?

Gravity or Switch Blade knives feature a button, level, or other type of switch that releases a spring pressure to automatically open the blade. On a Spring Assist knife, there is no separate button or switch. Instead, you apply pressure to part of the blade to begin the opening process. This is usually a small bump of metal which sticks out under the knife, making it fast and comfortable to use. Once you press on that part of the blade, it automatically opens and locks into place. Since the action of opening the knife is started by pressing the blade metal, instead of a button or switch, it is considered to bypass the laws which ban Switch Blade knives.

It appears as a beauty but from the start a sticky little monster. The blade will not open smoothly,it sticks. This was to be a great spring assisted little beauty and it disappoints me greatly. One of the worst knives, if not the worst, got from BUDK. Sorry' but I cant recommend it to anyone.

Very Sharp Knife Reviewed by Jason on Jan 10, 2014   5 out of 5

Please watch the the YouTube video titled "How It Works : Tailwind Assisted Opening Mechanism" before attempting one hand opening. It might save you band aids. I have band aids on my middle and ring fingers right now. You need to use the thumbscrew to deploy the blade. This is tricky if you have big hands. It's a small knife and there is no place to rest your middle finger while putting pressure on the thumbscrew. If you like a challenge, this knife is for you. It's really a cool design. But, it takes practice to be able to open with one hand. It's safer with two hands.

Great knife. The first one I rec'd was very hard to open. Called BudK customer service and a new one was shipped out. Worked perfectly. Very fast and easy to open. Also the blade was sharp right out of the box. BudK has great stuff at great prices !!!
