hand forging samurai sword blades process

About Shinwa:

Shinwa swords are made by hand using traditional methods in the ancient sword-making township of Lonquan. The sword-making history of this town can be traced back to the twentieth year of the Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty – exceptional sword making continues there still today. The swordsmiths of Lonquan can apprentice for up to six years before they begin to forge these functional works of art on their own.

Each Shinwa sword is hand forged at temperatures of up to 1,100 °F and continuously heated, folded, hammered and shaped before being oil quenched and then straightened. Damascus steel blades are folded as many as ten times to yield up to 2,056 layers of premium Damascus steel. After quenching the blade is then ground and hand sharpened and polished by the swordsmith on a series of wet stones. Each set of these wet stones contains a finer level of silicate particles, which produces an even sharper edge. In the final stages of this painstaking process, the tsuka is wrapped and tsuba and other fittings are added before a thin coat of oil is added to the blade to prevent corrosion.

Great Sword Reviewed by Edmond T Siwecki on May 27, 2016   5 out of 5

This is the Second swordI bought that had some Bad Reviews! Why? Because Dan Voges of Nebraska explained some failures and he highly recommended the products! I have Many other Shinwa swords and all are well made so I have to agree with Dan in his acessments. These are Swords, not baseball bats, as such they are made to slice, not Hack! Thanks Dan, because you can explain Quality, I now own another Fine Sword!

This sword is awesome. The first thing I did was slice a Gatorade bottle. The blade is perfection and the case it comes in astounded me. A must buy in my personal opinion.

Incredible Value Reviewed by on Nov 30, 2015   5 out of 5

Caught this on the BOGO sale so received two for the price of one! Ordered on a Friday and had them Monday afternoon. GA to ME in just three days is absolutely fantastic. Thank you TS and FedEx ground! Both swords came in their own very nice display box. Each was in a sword bag. Both had sharp edges - made clean cuts right out of the box. One of them had a very slight wobble but the other was tight. These are my first double-edged swords. I am in no way any expert, but they felt good in balance and weight. The pictures in the display above do not do the piece full justice. The blades are beautiful. In my opinion, TS is a quality company and I recommend them to anyone looking for value and service. They will have all my business.

Excellant Sword Reviewed by DANIEL VOGES on Jan 23, 2015   5 out of 5

I have sold a few of these swords and have one I practice with often I bent the blade once, it's easy to bend any blade, as you go to strike if you turn your wrist even a little bit you won't strike square with the blade that is how you bend a blade all you have to do is bend it back. This double edge sword is great, when it comes to double edge swords the Black Dragon is lighter than most, this makes the Black Dragon a very swift sword. If you are a true Swordsman you will Love this sword. Thank you, Daniel of Nebraska.

Comes in a display worthy sword case, has a beautiful look to it. It is wicked sharp, and every bit as elegant as described.

I own four swords and they are great if you people that say you do not care for what you got? Then spend 5000.00 on up for a highly ture made sword and then you won't have to complain.

do waste your money Reviewed by Bruce on Mar 25, 2014   1 out of 5

This is my first order placed with this company and the item is not worth it . The handle wrapping glue is breaking down and unraveling the glue is all over scabbard and blade it looks like dried fish scales and wood on the scabbard is paper thin.their is nothing about this item which is not a negative.

good deal Reviewed by lowell bradley on Feb 24, 2014   4 out of 5

I got this sword to replace one that was stolen from me. I like the weight and balance of it. As far as it being Damascus steel, I can't tell. But it seams that the coating would come off verry easy. It is far from Razer sharp, like advertised. If I sharpen it , I would likely have to use gun bluing to make the sharpened edge black again.but I am satisfied with it for the price.
