The Kind of Weapon I Would Design
"I've always been more of a swords man and I was never really big into spears or pole arms. But, as I started writing fantasy stories I began to realize the impracticality of swords on the battlefield and started to revisit the pole arm. Pole arms started to really grow on me when I realized how useful they can be and little skill is required to master the weapon. However, the extremely long length of the weapon does present its problems. In one of my stories I invented a new type of pole arm that I dubbed the fighting spear. It was supposed to be the length of a standard fighting staff. The weapon functions much the same as a staff but gives you the added benefit of decapitation. The M48 Naginata embodies my design concept with the 11 inch blade (although my design was a double edge dagger blade) and the overall length of the weapon is under 5 feet allowing me to use the weapon in confined spaces. This is my kind of weapon."
