Product Description
The Military Assistance Command, Vietnam-Studies and Observations Group, known to many as MACV-SOG was an elite group of special forces soldiers that operated in secrecy before and during the Vietnam Conflict. This Vietnam bowie knife is modeled after the very knife which was issued to this specialized group of soldiers. This is a historical replica in no way associated with the SOG knives brand.

This knife is better than I expected. I had a knife similar to this when I was about 12. That knife was a cheap piece of junk, so I wasn't expecting much with this one. When this one arrived I was pleasantly surprised at how well built this is. The handle is solid and the blade is firm with no blade play. Excellent knife. I hope this knife comes back for sale so others can purchase and enjoy it.
This knife has a really nice blade, it came sharp and has a good weight. The only thing that could have better quality is the hilt. But overall for the price, it is definitely worth buying.
I love this knife. It looks so awsome. I like the sheath that it comes in . Excellent knife for the price
I was quite surprised with the quality of the knife. I gave both I had purchased for gifts and the guys loved the knife, went on and on about it. Told them I paid $12.99 for each and they thought I was joking. Very nice going to buy one for myself now.
HEY, I BOUGHT TWO OF THESE RIGHT FROM THE START, I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE KNIVES. MY SON LOVES IT. HE HAS ALREADY BEEN TRYING IT OUT ON A LOT OF THINGS AND IS VERY HAPPY WITH IT. THANKS. THE PRICE WAS RIGHT AND THE SHIPPING WAS RIGHT ON TIME .
I bought one for my son and when i saw the quality of the knife I had to have one for myself. I keep it on my Bug Out Pack. One of the better knifes i have bought from Bud K. Very solid knife.
This is a great value. If you are a camper, collector, or in the "prepping" movement...add this to your tool chest. Though this is designed as a combat knife, most find use as "camp" knives cutting kindling, trimming branches, cleaning fish, etc. Should you have to defend yourself, this will do the job.
i bought this last spring and used it all summer atleast once a week for light camping duty. cutting up steaks and other food, making hot dog sticks, pretty much anything you need to do in the woods. i had to sharpen it a bit but only once. seems to be good steel and holds an edge well. i would only use the stone they provided in an emergency, its a bit course. but its definately a quality blade i'll be ordering another.
REAL LEATHER is all you smell when you first open the box. How nice is that!!! The handle on this knife is fine quality. Then blade is pretty good to. It Feels very nice in the hand and grips very well... NOT a toy or a cheap made knife. Great price for what it is, I will be ordering more of these and possible the other styles too.
THIS KNIFE IS AMAZING! When I first got this knife I was really impressed. The knife is razor sharp right out of the box! this is my knife I use for work now. It good for cutting wood and rope and self-defense Over all this knife is amazing good buy and worth alot more then 12.99. another great knife from Budk.
While the blade is a little thinner than I would like and the leather handle is a bit crude it is none the less an extrodinary knife for the money, complete with scabbard. It is not really a five star knife but I got two for 20 bucks and that is absolutely a five star value.
Excellent knife for the price. Has nice weight to it, fits good in my hand. As a collector I have to say, get one for your collection.
Best knife I have. I've got a SOG brand knife that looks close to this one snd it cost me over $100 and I like this one more. It came sharp and even after my brother tried to sharpen it (with no knowledge on sharpening) it didn't wear this thing out. My only complaint is the sheath, some of the threading is coming undone but other than that the knife itself gets a 5, the sheath on the other hand gets a 3.
My husband gave this to me as an "I LOVE YOU PRESENT". I use it daily, as I am planting gardens in a new house. It is large & long enough for working the soil and light enough for my arthric hands. It's just perfect. Love it..
Bought this knife to add to my collection, and I have to say it exceeded my expectations. The knife is solid, the blade is well made, and the handle is something I'd expect on a much more expensive knife (and the leather sheath is nice too!). This knife just feels great in your hand. You honestly can't go wrong buying this knife, especially at the price of $12.99 or less! I loved it so much I bought one for my sister, and will probably by a few more for friends and family. If you're thinking about it, stop debating. Buy it! It's a great knife at great price!
I love it. It's my first knife from this site. And I'm impressed. I wanted a good looking military knife but in a old way and boy I got it and boy is it sharp! Love the site of it the feel of it alround good knife. I'll buy from here agin im making a wish list
This is a well made knife with a nice leather sheath to go with it. The knife had a very nice edge on it straight out of the box which impressed me. Great value for the money. Will make a nice addition to my collection.
this knife is an amazing buy, it came very sharp out of the box. with the small sharpening stone attached to it i got it even sharper. it was almost as sharp as my mora, if you know mora's they can shave right when you buy. i couldnt shave with this knife but i think if i had a better sharpener. the sheath is not very quality, some of the seems have fallen apart even with me not using it at all. the small lanyard hole at the base of the handle is perfect for a paracord wrap, or a lanyard to put on your wrist. the snaps are very nice, a lot better than velcro since they do not wear down over time.
This knife is sturdy, well proportioned, fits and feels good in the hand. Not rAZOR SHARP OUT OF THE BOX, BUT EASILY SHARPENED AND HOLDS AN EDGE.
Got my 2 knives yesterday they're great. I gave one to my best friend and he loved it when he first held it. Great knife so far haven't tested it much going hunting with him and another tomorrow so hopefully it'll be a good skinner. And the sheath and stone were awesome. It was sharp but not like I like it but a couple stroke with the stone and could shave the hair on my arm. And I'll have my friend review on here as well. Thanks Budk.
I decided to write a review about this knife after owning it for a few months with no problems. When it arrived in the mail mail the edge wasn't razor sharp but fairly sharpened. The leather pieces were also light in color but with constant use the oils in my hand dyed it a rich dark brown. Since I've bought this knife I've use it for everything from butchering and skinning, small hammering, whittling, and as an eating utensil. But despite all the praise the thing that sticks in my craw is the pleather sheath. So because of that I'd like to be precise and rate this product with a 4.5.
as a Vietnam Vet, having known several REAL LRRP'S Individual, so I saw the Original LRPS Knives. this knife is so damn close to the Original, its scary!!! I bought two of them, when I received them, I put up my Blackjack fixed blade that cost ten times the price, also retired my puma trail hunter, same thing. THIS is the knife that is always on my belt, ALWAYS! I give it Five Stars because I can't give it TEN.
This is the best knife i own, it is just pure awesome, do NOT spend 70 bucks on some SOG bowie knife when you can buy from BUDK, btw i got my order in 2 days, it said (7-10 days), thanks BUDK!!!
I can't believe what we put this knife through! I bought two of these knives, one for my very good friend, and we put it through every test we could. This knife can go through wood, metal siding, rubber, and just through a steel oil drum. I put a sizable dent in a solid oak tree with the butt of the knife, but the impact knocked the brass piece at the top of the hilt loose, but that can be easily fixed with super-glue. The sharpening stone works, but only in a certain way. If you are just going for looks, then the hilt is a light brown instead of dark brown, but other than that, it is a flawless knife. We definitely plan on getting more.
I just received my package from BudK, got it the next day! That was regular shipping. The quality of all the knives were great, with the Vietnam fighter being one of the best. I love the quality, and the price. Where a actual Vietnam era knife would cost much more, This is a very nice replica for less than ten bucks. Keep up the good work BudK.
LOVE THIS KNIFE! Best knife I have excluding the one I spent $100 on, but it is very close! I would trust this knife to protect myself with!
This is an awesome blade and fantastic service. I look rorward to doing more business in the future.
Good knife, its sturdy, nothing is lose! The sheath is the same one as the usmc combat fighter knife! So no complaints yet!
I havnt really put the item to much use but shipping is amazing. i got it the same week i ordered it. everything is so fairly priced. I would recommend this site to anyone.
this is a good knife. i received this knife a couple weeks ago and out of the box it had a ok edge but needed a little sharpening. and also the hand guard was a little loose but nothing a little glue cant fix.
this is her son and i have bought from this site before but when i saw this i couldn't believe my eyes and thnx for the reviews they definitely changed my mine about other sites Budk is the best ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)
Nice knife bought as a gift has a nice weight to it sharp edge and is a great show piece or utility knife recommend this to any person looking for a great military knife.
Great knife for the price! Sharpened up well. I ground down the brass guard especially on the thumb side so it would fit nicely into my hand. Also could grind on a second edge on top if desired. I can't believe the stacked leather handle for the price. Nice work BUDK!
I'm a 14 year old boy. i really like this knife because it looks like it could get my one and only priority with a knife, to make weapons. I've heard(not just from this review), that it is an extremely good work knife. Just what i need.
The knife is better looking in the pic than in the hand. Not ugly but there's machining on the brass and the handle isn't as dark. The leather sheath is mid level - thick but feels cheap. The knife comes pretty sharp but a touch up brought it razor sharp quickly. It's a solid knife and a perfect work horse but not a show piece. but for the price you can't complain.
A very good Chinese knockoff of the S.O.G. original and priced to please. I agree with many of the other reviewers that the sheath could use significant improvement, but when you need to pay 15 times as much for the current production name brand, I'm sure most could find a replacement sheath that will suffice (G.I. type Nylon Knife Sheath Item #01 RT40065 for instance?) and never feel taken advantage of. This knife was NOT designed as a survival knife nor a hunting knife, it's sole purpose was combat in the same spirit as the Marine K-Bar or the Fairbairn-Sykes British Commando knife. You shouldn't expect to abuse it for purposes it wasn't designed. All in all still one fine combat tool.
Used the original in country long time ago. It was a life saver. This one seems pretty strong. Had to work to get a decent edge though. It rides on my hip when I ride my Harley.I rely one it like I did the old one to be ready when I need it.
I was very impressed with this knife for the price, and it seems like something that will hold up after use. The blade finish appears well done, like the black will not chip off easily, and I love the look of the stacked leather washer handle with the brass guard and pommel accenting the ends. If the sheath is fake leather, they really put a lot of effort in hiding it, with black felt firmly veneered on the inner side of each place it is visible. The sharpening stone pouch is definitely real leather, to make the description of a "leather sheath" kind of the truth in a roundabout way. Anyway, it's a great start to a bug out kit, when you don't want to put your expensive brand name knife in a ruck in the corner that is only set aside for emergencies and forget about it, this is a great budget-minded way to go. I'd suggest to anyone to get the two for a savings, and have a gift or barter item to sweeten up any trade at the next gun and knife show or barter fair/swap meet.
i ordered a couple of these vietnam fighters . this is a well made knife , especially the handle . they didn't skimp on the handle that's for sure the blade is ok good thickness holds an edge pretty good . i put an edge on it in my shop you could shave with . then whittled some hickory ,it did just fine . the sheath on the other hand is vinyl not even good vinyl . it will not last through one trip to the forest . so good knife, bad sheath, great handle .
Not exactly like the one I had back in country, but the handle is more comfortable. It takes and holds a nice edge. Not sure the term Bowie should be applied to this knife. It is not made to be a hacker it is a tool to slice and dice. Still it brings back some memories.
I bought this knife a few weeks ago and so far i'm happy with it. It cuts well and is a very sturdy knife, not your usual flimsy stuff you would get at this price. The handle of the knife actually tapers a bit from the guard to the pommel which is not shown in the picture, this is not at all an issue unless you are worried about the appearance of knife. This blade gets four stars from me because the sheath is nothing but junk, if you buy this knife be prepared to make a new sheath for it. Overall a good knife and a great one for the price!
First of all, I love the blade on this thing. It came pretty sharp, but I used my own sharpening system on the edge instead of the little stone it comes with. I'm not a huge fan of the sheath. It seems cheaply made for a leather sheath but that's my opinion plus I don't like leather sheathes to begin with. My only problem with the knife is that the sheath and the leather wrapped handle have a very potent smell. I don't know if it's oil or the actual leather but its very strong. After awhile it disappeared so I can't complain. Still, very good knife, one of the coolest in my collection now.
When I got the knife I was very excited. It took a bit of sharpening but that was easy. The handle is made nicely and has a metal pommel. Overall the blade is well worth it, the sheath on the other hand... It sucks, plain and simple. After a few weeks it is falling apart on the sides, it isn't even real leather. I could cut it with my finger nail it was so soft. So the blade gets a 4 star, the sheath a 1.
sturdy, well built knife, keeps an edge. I"ve friggin thrown this, used it as a hammer, used it to split wood, skin small animals, great for the price.
Great knife for the price.wish I could have bought an other soild heavey blade makes for easy cuting.
This knife was given to me for X-ms 2012 I was very excited when I received this knife and for good reason this is a great camping knife it is not to big or to small the handle is one of the best features to the knife its sharpener was good and the sheath over all was good the only flaw was the outer part of the knife clasp that came off. That was the only disappoinement, over all this is as good as it gets for $13.
Great knife for the price! As others have said a run across the stone to sharpen is all that was needed. A good size, not too big not too small.
Got my 2 knives the other day! outstanding delivery time. They arrived at my house in 3 days even though the time frame was 7-10 days. As for the knives, they are very robust with a nice feel to them. Like some others have said they weren't very sharp, but nothing that a little stone work can't fix. I'll be testing them in the field during deer hunting season and i believe that they should prove useful for the price. I got 2 for $20 and one will probably go in the BOB bag.
so far i like this knife it wasnt sharp enough out the box for my tastes but it was a quick fix now i can shave with it lol anyway i have field tested it yet up till today iv been faithful to my green beret field knife but i put it to rest for a bit so i can see how bright this macv/sog can shine. ps this knife has a real good weight to it so if ur lookin for a light knife this aint it if ur lookin for something to take in the woods with u id definitely look at this beauty. ill update after my next long trip out on the land.
My two Vietnam Fighter knives arrived today. They were well-packaged with no shipping damage. QC on the knives is mediocre as one of the knives has a slightly loose guard and the guy or gal drilling the lanyard hole put two holes in one side of the hilt, merging into one hole at the other side! Should not effect functionality though and I do not plan to send it back. The knives were fairly sharp out of the box but I sharpened them some more to slightly less than shaving sharp, fairly easily on my WorkSharp. The blade thickness is about 0.2" which I find about right for a survival knife. The "pleather" sheaths are functional and would not be bad for casual use or storage; however I am making harness leather bi-directional survival sheaths for the knives that may out-last the knife. I do plan to use the knives in the field and like someone previously posted, will not feel too bad if they get scratched up or if I lose one. I think they would work fine for gutting and skinning a deer.
Bought this with the USMC knife. This is the better deal. It's not Ka-Bar quality by any means, and is smaller than the USMC knife, but it's got better balance with a solid handle. The blade is sturdy enough, though clearly not the surgical steel of higher end knives. Nice show piece and would make due in the woods in a pinch. Good buy at $12, excellent buy at $10 or less, probably not worth $20.
OK ... let's be clear on this knife. It was an impulse buy for me because of the price, period. But ... I'm giving it fours stars and I like it very much. Here's why: Even though the blade is an inexpensive Chinese piece of steel, it is set in a darn nice looking and substantial handle. I love stacked leather. (My first boy scout knife had a layered leather handle as this one does.) Every day, I look at my knives and ask myself "Which one(s) do I need for today's jobs?" Then, I strap on the gear I need. This knife is a simple workhorse, inexpensive and ready for work. I don't care about the speculation of whether Vietnam boots on the ground might have used something sort of like this ... meh, I just like the knife for the meager investment, and so will you.
Got this as a gift and all I can say is freak in sweet. Heaver than I thought and sharp as h**l. All around a great knife .
When you get this it is a pretty good knife, the handle is a little lighter brown and doesn't come too sharp. The sharpening stone isn't that good but it gets the job done. This knife is very sturdy, and I'm glad i bought it when it was only $10. The sheath is okay, but after a while the clip thing falls off, but the leather seems pretty good and durable. Thank you BUDK, I'm very glad I found this website and have already ordered more knives from here.
This knife has a wonderful sheath, the sheath is sturdy, and hard leather and it even came with a sharpening stone! The knife was nice and sturdy but the only worry I have is the top brass handle just under the blade is kind of wiggly and I haven't even used it yet, and I don't think I want to risk it... so I might just use a little superglue and hope it will go away other than that it is a great knife, BUY IT.
Its pretty good it has a good weight to it not very sharp, i sharpened and doesn't lose it's edge so overall great knife.
This is a great knife for the price. The handle isn't as dark as it is in the picture but its still a good knife.
This is a well made knife. It was not sharp. The steel is hardened and after a short time and some good stones I gave it a razor edge. At this price it is a great camp knife. It came with a good case the little stone is fine for field touch ups on the blade. My new everyday camp knife.
this knife is one of the best i'v come cross for the price i would recommend this knife to any one looking for a ok knife
Great knife! I just got it a few days ago, and love it! It has a good weight, and the sheath is pretty good too. The top part of the sheath broke off though...Other than that great knife well worth it! Everyone should get one.
Love the knife..... But the sheath came cracked and all messed up. The knife was sharp and i feel well made. The sheath was made out of that plastic leather, it was cold out, below 0, and i think that's why it was messed up. Once I find a good leather or nylon sheath i'll be very happy with it.
This knife was a gift and I've used it during several camping and outdoor jaunts. I was surprised at the general quality of the blade and handle. I dislike finger grips but these felt well placed and did not irritate my hand. The sheath is adequate for the type of outdoor activities I do. It stripped bark easily for the making of cordage and took up several soaproot plants for bathing and the taking of fish. It sharpens easily but not with the attached stone. Get a decent one. Around camp it cut the toughest meat and the butt worked as a decent tenderizer. While not a great knife, it is a GOOD knife and worth twice the price. I will be getting another for Xmas or so I'm told.
I got the knife around a week after it shipped and liked the look when I got it. The blade came very dull and the clip that goes around the handle ripped off but is easy to fix. The anodized finish comes off pretty easy but that doesn't matter. I love the knife and for the price, it's more than extraordinary!
I have to agree with Russ, the knife looks a little better in the picture, the handle is a lot lighter color. The blade is very sturdy feeling, I'm glad I ordered 2. The sheath is not leather its pleather, definitely the weak link in this deal, but not a deal breaker @ 9.95. If you are looking for a knife to take camping and don't care if it gets dinged up, this is the ticket. If you want a show piece....why are you looking @ 10 dollar knives??
This knife has a cool looking handle, brass end cap but a good knock off of the S.O.G original. And the sheath needs better work done on it it is NOT battle worthy. But a good display knife.
this knife looks nice but the first time i used it the tip broke off and it doent keep a sharp edge, good thing it comes with a sharpening stone. also the handle was a little flaky on arrival.
Mine came sharp. It feels a little loose at times. But it is not an expensive knife. Holds an edge so far.
I purchased this knife a month ago. I received it and opened it to find the blade looked like someone used touch up paint in the scratched(spot was the size of a nickel),pommel had a tarnished finger print on it . After sanding the blade and 3 coats of flat black paint,it's an awesome knife.
The blade needed a bit of work, and the hand guard needed a bit of final polishing/shaping to remove tooling marks The tip of the blade was blunt! Expect to spend a bit of time sharpening. The sheath is not leather and was falling apart right out of the box. Still a good value for the money. This would make an excellent general purpose camp knife. The blade is not too hard, and would be easy to sharpen in the field. The only real drawback is that you will need a new sheath!
just got mine today, the top clip on the sheath broke off... other than that, its frigging awesome
It looks great but mine cane with a dull blade. I tried to touch it up with a Gerber butcher steel, then ceramic stones, then a Smiths tri stone, then my Lansky diamond hones all to no good result. I can't believe this steel won't take an edge! The steel must have been a bad batch. Also the aluminum guide rails of my Lansky sharpener took some of the black finish off the blade and I only had it on finger tight. I think it's just a painted finish. It shouldn't be that tender.
The knife is cheap, pretty, fits well in the hand and is a nice knife but the blade out of the box couldn't cut paper at all much less shave, I own $200 of hand held knife sharping equipment , even the spyderco V, and nice stones but the edge has such a messed up angle even after 2 hours with everything I have I still couldn't make it cut paper, that's disipointing since I bought more than oneof them there all the same... I don't have a belt sander or anything to put the edge that's needed for this knife ...
