I'm happy with the sword. The blade fits into the scabbard very tightly and the finish on the handle and scabbard is nice. I took a few hours after cleaning off the blade sharpening it and it's pretty sharp right now. I don't know how far the tang goes back into the handle but I wouldn't trust it in a life or death situation. It fits into my umbrella stand very nicely though.
The wood has a darker orange that laminates in the light like some nice furniture, I was expecting a much cheaper wood tone, very pleased. The habaki sais budk with the logo but doesnt fit the blade which is glued going in at an angle which gives it a look as if the original blade was taken out and replaced with the thin. For the price I couldn't have asked for more. There is much wax inside saya like mentioned in previous comments. Even my dad was impressed and thought the sword was worth way more.
This one I like. Dull, but easily sharpened. Nice feel/weight. Will buy another.
Closest resemblance to the Zatoichi TV/movie cane sword I have seen. Although blade is very dull and may be inferior in quality, it is the ONLY cane sword that even comes close (as far as looks and size) to the ones used in the TV/movies. It also fits smaller hands perfectly, unlike other cane swords I have that feel just too large in the hand to comfortably wield singlehandedly. Now if the blade could be replaced somehow with a higher quality metal, than I believe you would have the Ultimate true Zatoichi cane sword. Well worth the money!
when i got this sword it looked just like the picture and it seems to be well made but the blade was dull so i know have to figure out how to sharpen it because i use these kinds of swords as protection when walking or hiking
For $20 I was expecting a toy. This is a weapon. The picture makes it look yellow, but it's a light brown, real wood color. The Asian writing is printed on the wood, not stamped into it, so you can sand it off easily if you want. It needs to be sharpened and there's a lot of wax inside the scabbard that leave chunks on the blade, but that will die down over time. I highly recommend it!
The wood is not a blond wood, but very dark. Not as pictured.
This replacement is a much more suitable wall hanger, as it is not chipped up, and splitting. This is one I could show to friends as a fine example of BudK's low priced, handcrafted, carbon blades. Although the blade's lack of razor sharpness was at first a turn off, I've decided to keep it that way. The tip is sharp, & mean. Looks great amid tribal, zen, or other naturalistic room decor. A great blend of simplistic beauty & semi-functionality. Probably one of the best $20 katanas you can buy.
Upon opening the box, I noticed a chip on the decorative side of the wood scabbard, with a hairline fracture beginning from that chip, growing each time the sword was removed/replaced within the scabbard. The blade sometimes wouldn't fit back in the scabbard either, which tells me the laborer who handcrafted this screwed up the original boring of the scabbard, having to redo it a second time. The blade was so loaded with wax, your enemy would laugh at you if you brandished it. Of course, the blade was super dull. The natural feel of this sword's handle was great, (there was no wobbly blade) but expect "rustic" construction, with quality either lacking, or grossly varying from product to product. I got this item for display purpose, and sadly found too many imperfections about it, rendering it worthless for that purpose. I've returned it for an exchange, and am currently waiting for them to send a Timber Rattler NinjatÅ, which has a tougher scabbard made by a reliable machine.
This Katana is a good addition for using as a home defense item. It is cheap and made of high carbon steel (not stainless). It can be sharpened and will hold a good edge (if properly sharpened). The wood scabbard and the wooden handle make it look as if it is a wooden practice sword so it can be left out in plain sight while hiding it's true purpose.
