Are you here for a Yorichi sword replica, or a Tanjiro sword replica? We carry replicas of popular Demon Slayer swords showcased in that popular anime series, but are you familiar with the lore behind some of these fictional blades? Demon Slayer swords are special blades called nichirin swords, which we will cover in greater depth here. Here’s what to know.

What Is a Nichirin Sword?

A nichirin sword, also called a “nichirin to”, or “sun blade” is a special type of fictional Japanese sword that is imbued with the power of sunlight and used by Demon Slayers to kill demons. These swords are made with Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand and Scarlet Ore; these are only found high on select mountains like Sunlight Mountain and are used to make special grades of steel that can be used to effectively create a nichirin blade that can kill a demon. Because these iron sands and ores are constantly bathed in sunlight year round, swords used to make them can be wielded with great effect against demons. Particularly, these swords can be used to decapitate a demon, which causes them to disintegrate into ash, similarly to how they would respond if they were struck by a sunbeam.

When wielded by a Demon Slayer of a particular level of skill, these swords change color when they are drawn. It takes special skill to do so, but when it is accomplished, these swords are also known as “color changing katanas”. Once a Demon Slayer attains the rank of hashira, his or her sword can be engraved with the words “akki messatsu” which translates to “destroyer of demons”.

Parts of a Nichirin Sword

Like other traditional Japanese swords, a nichirin sword has several different constituent components. Obviously, the most noticeable part of a nichirin sword is the blade, which typically has a slight curve, similarly to a traditional katana. Where the hamon line would be present on a katana, there may be special markings or colors on a nichirin sword. For instance, in Tanjiro’s sword, there is a dark flame pattern along the edge. In Yorichi’s sword, there is a bright red hamon line reminiscent of fire or sunlight.

The handguard of a Demon Slayer’s sword is known as a tsuba and usually reflects the breathing style of the slayer in question. For instance, in a nod to Shinobu Kosho’s insect breathing style, her sword’s tsuba bears a resemblance to a butterfly. The tsuba of Tanjiro’s sword sports a flame pattern, and Yorichi’s sword has a gold-margined tsuba. The tsuka, or hilt, of a nichirin sword also follows a similar pattern to that of other traditional Japanese swords, with a wrap that helps improve grip when the sword is wielded.

About Breathing Style and Demon Slayer Swords

Demon Slayer swords typically reflect attributes of the breathing style of the wielders, and it is also the case that the color of a nichirin sword may reflect its powers. For instance, sun breathing typically is associated with a black nichirin sword, whereas moon breathing is more closely associated with a nichirin sword of light purple color. Water breathing is associated with, and flame breathing is closely associated with a red blade.

Yorichi’s sword has a jet black blade, perhaps a nod to his sun breathing style, but the blade can turn bright crimson when he draws and wields it. There are also conditions in which certain nichirin swords can turn bright red, which is not necessarily a reflection of a breathing style, but that the wielder has caused the blade to emit great heat. This apparently causes great pain to demons and can prevent them from regenerating once struck.

What Are Some Famous Nichirin Swords from Demon Slayer

There are many well-known examples of nichirin swords from Demon Slayer, among the following.

  • Tanjiro’s sword: Tanjiro’s sword is among the most well-known from the series. The black color of the blade reflects his sun breathing technique and is apparently among the most dangerous to demons because the color absorbs the most sunlight. However, it is also said that a black blade portends an early death for the demon slayer who carries it.

  • Yorichi’s sword: Yorichi’s sword, inherited from Tanjiro, also has a black black, a reflection of his sun breathing technique, though it turns bright red when he wields it.

  • Rengoku’s sword: Rengoku carries a nichirin sword with a bright red blade, with a flame pattern running down the length of the edge, which is a nod to his fire breathing technique.

  • Tengen’s swords: Instead of a typical nichirin sword, Tengen carries two amber cleavers connected at the ends of their tsukas by a chain. He can wield these cleavers almost like a flail; the color is a reflection of his sound breathing technique.

  • Giyu’s sword: Giyu wields a bright blue nichirin sword, which symbolizes his water breathing technique. He is considered one of the best swordsmen in the series and his nichirin sword is one of the most memorable in Demon Slayer.

  • Zenitsu’s sword: Zenitsu practices thunder breathing, which makes him lightning quick. As a result, his nichirin sword has a yellow, thunderbolt pattern on the blade, a reflection of this breathing style.

What Is a Battle-Ready Anime Sword Replica?

A battle-ready anime cosplay sword is one that is made according to such specifications that it can be used for live cutting practice. At minimum, to be considered battle-ready, a sword must:

  • Be forged using a suitable steel alloy. Typically high carbon alloys are used.

  • Be tempered so that it does not chip, shatter or break during use.

  • And feature full-tang construction, with a tang that is integral with the blade. Welding or threaded tangs are not acceptable.

If the sword in question has at least these three attributes, it might be reasonable to consider it a battle ready sword. If you have any questions, though, feel free to contact us.
