Some of the best reasons a shillelagh can be an effective self defense weapon are as follows:
- Utility. A shillelagh is only a self defense weapon when expressly wielded as one. Most of the time they are nothing more than harmless walking sticks.
- Admittance in places where other weapons might not be allowed. It might be highly illegal in some situations to carry a sword umbrella or cane as they conceal a blade. The same case might not always apply to a shillelagh.
- Efficacy. While shillelaghs do not conceal blades, they can be highly effective when used as a striking implement to disarm or deter a would-be assailant.
- Non-lethal deterrence. Another great thing about Irish shillelaghs is that they can be used non-lethally to deter attackers. Whereas sword canes and umbrellas are lethal as a last resort, shillelaghs are effective when used to apply pressure or for striking sensitive areas to ward off an attack without needing to resort to lethal force.
